I have now been to the south of France numeral times to paint the arrival of spring so to say. The upcoming flowers, new colors on the fields, singing birds and the pure joy of all the butterflies that flutter around me is a never ending inspiration.
I decided to paint every butterfly I spotted in France. The Swallow Tail looks a bit different when fluttering. It's because of the long tails. I've learned it's their defense mechanism, because a bird will think that's their head. It's best to get up early because butterflies need to warm up their wings in the sun before they can fly. And when they are sunbathing you have a much better view on their wings.
This painting is ready to hang. It is painted and signed on the side, so there is no additional frame needed.

'Swallow Tail' - 10x10 cm - LG
Zuid Frankrijk heb ik regelmatig bezocht. Het is heerlijk om daar te zijn en als het ware de opkomst van de lente te schilderen. De eerste bloemen, de nieuwe gewassen die de velden kleuren, zingende vogels en de ontelbare kleurige vlinders zijn een oneindige inspiratie.
Deze laatsten besloot ik een soort van te documenteren. Niet door ze zo heel naar met een speld door hun lijfje ergens op vast te prikken maar gewoon door ze te schilderen. De 'Swallow Tail' ziet er een beetje anders uit in de lucht vanwege de lange 'staarten' aan het eind van de vleugel. Die lijken in de vlucht op hun koppie wat vlinder-etende vogels in de war brengt. Wil je ze dus zittend spotten moet je wel vroeg opstaan aangezien vlinders hun vleugels opwarmen in de zon om goed te kunnen vliegen. En tijdens dit zonnebaden heb je natuurlijk een veel beter zicht op hun vleugels.
