What a beautiful bird. They are agile and easily catch insects in full flight out of the sky. Fortunately, their meal does not only consists of bees but also wasps, hornets and grasshoppers. The bee-eater is immune to wasp poison. And they also have a trick to remove their sting.
They live in groups and especially when they breed they do so in colonies. They make a hole in clay walls on the bank or in a sand dune and sometimes even in a narrow passage under the ground. Just like the kingfisher, they raise their young together, and they also have the same short legs :-) It is rather special that the males feed the brooding females and the baby birds. But even the males without a partner help :-)

'Bee-Bee-eater'- schilderij 13x18 cm
Wat een prachtige vogel. Ze zijn behendig en plukken met gemak insecten in volle vlucht uit de lucht. Gelukkig eten ze niet alleen bijen maar ook wespen, horzels en sprinkhanen. De bijeneter is immuun voor wespensteken. En ze hebben een trucje om de angel te verwijderen.
Ze leven in groepjes en zeker als ze broeden doen ze dat in kolonies. Ze maken een holletje in kleiwanden aan de oever of in een zandduin en soms zelfs in een nauw gangetje onder de grond. Net als de ijsvogel brengen ze hun jongen samen groot, en ze hebben trouwens ook van de korte pootjes:-) Wat daarnaast bijzonder is de mannetjes voeden de broedende vrouwtjes en de babyvogels. Maar zelfs de mannetjes zonder partner helpen mee:-)
