I have now been to the south of France numeral times to paint the arrival of spring so to say. The upcoming flowers, new colors on the fields, singing birds and the pure joy of all the butterflies that flutter around me is a never ending inspiration.
I decided to paint every butterfly I spotted in France. The White Admiral I saw when swimming in the pool. I thought it was pretty enough to jump out and follow this one all through the garden. Hoping to catch a better glimpse when she wood be landing on a flower. Luckily she did:-) It's best to get up early because butterflies need to warm up their wings in the sun before they can fly. And when they are sunbathing you have a much better view on their wings.
This painting is ready to hang. It is painted and signed on the side, so there is no additional frame needed.

'White Admiral' - 10x10 cm - LG
Zuid Frankrijk heb ik regelmatig bezocht. Het is heerlijk om daar te zijn en als het ware de opkomst van de lente te schilderen. De eerste bloemen, de nieuwe gewassen die de velden kleuren, zingende vogels en de ontelbare kleurige vlinders zijn een oneindige inspiratie.
Deze laatsten besloot ik een soort van te documenteren. Niet door ze zo heel naar met een speld door hun lijfje ergens op vast te prikken maar gewoon door ze te schilderen. De 'White Admiral' of kleine ijsvogelvlinder zoals ze bij ons heet, zag ik terwijl ik in het zwembad lag. Ik vond haar bijzonder genoeg om snel uit het water te klimmen en haar te volgen door de hele tuin. Gelukkig had ze honger zodat ik haar kon bestuderen terwijl ze landde op een bloem. Het is handiger om vroeg op te staan want vlinders moeten hun vleugels eerst opwarmen in de zon om goed te kunnen vliegen. En tijdens dit zonnebaden heb je natuurlijk een veel beter zicht op hun vleugels.
